This recipe was found among the writings of the well-known Swedish physician, rector of medicine, Dr. Samst. He died in his 104th year in a riding accident. His parents and grandparents all reached a patriarchal age.
The internal organs - hence the whole system, suffer if there is no bitter taste element in the diet. A lack of it results in symptoms like poor digestion, fatigue and irregularity. Traditionally used to help digestion, Swedish Bitters can promote regularity, maintain and improve health and maintain energy-levels.
There are 4 different types of taste buds on the surface of the tongue to discern what is wholesome and what is not. These papillae allow for tastes of sour, sweet, salty and bitter. In our current diet, there exists almost no bitter taste - no bitter substances at all. In general, the sweet side predominates, eliminating bitter foods from the diet. A bitter taste has a profound effect on the digestive system, especially the liver - the keeper of metabolic balance within the body.
The liver produces fluids required for proper and complete digestion, as well as to eliminate dangerous toxins. Even if a good natural diet is eaten, artificial ingredients and chemical residues can find their way into the system. The liver needs the stimulation of bitter herbs in order to do its job properly. It stores usable glycogen, copper and iron to feed the cells It metabolises proteins, carbohydrates and fats It safely removes poisonous substances from the blood It is the metabolic laboratory of the body. It produces gall which is indispensable for the fractioning and digestion of fatty substances in our intestines as it is the bitterest liquid in the body. Helps those who suffer from chronic metabolic problems and digestive difficulties that lend themselves to increased tension and stress.
Useful for people with problems of circulation, lack of physical and mental energy. Beneficial for people who easily contract colds and infections. Indicated for people with allergies. Helpful for people who are fatigued and tire easily. Eases constipation and regulates bowel movements. Eases joint pain: arthritis/rheumatism Important for those who have had their gall-bladder removed. Reduces bloating and gas.

Today, artichoke, watercress and certain salad-greens are the only foods left in our diet with a somewhat bitter taste. Herbs and herbal extracts can provide the bitters we lack and the regular use of them in precise amounts can be very beneficial.
Bitters have the following actions on the body's organs and systems:
- The salivary glands are stimulated to secrete
- The mucosa are activated to secrete more
- Motor changes in the stomach and gall-bladder are brought about
- The nervous system, together with its sympathetic regulation, isactivated
- The liver is stimulated to produce more gall and in its overall activity
Maria Treben gave the formula its wide, public renown through her book "Health Through God's Pharmacy"; long after she was cured of the typhoid fever she had contracted in a refugee camp in Austria.
EXTERNAL USE: As a compress to soothe inflammation of skin, gout, insect bites and burning of sores. Application: Cover area with fat-based cream; apply gauze or cotton saturated with bitters. Cover with plastic and secure with bandage.
INTERNAL USE: Recommended for relief of bloating, flatulence, sluggish bowels and constipation. Stimulates stomach and intestinal secretions; ease that "full" feeling.
Average: 1 tsp. diluted with water AM and PM.
Individual reactions differ greatly, so the amount must be adapted to personal requirements: generally, take 1 tsp. before meals and 1 tsp. after meals up to 6 tsp. daily. May be added to pre-boiled water or fruit juice for a more pleasant flavour. Cautions: If diarrhoea or cramps occur, intake should be decreased.
Do not take for extended, uninterrupted periods, as the digestive system becomes accustomed to its use, and renders it less effective. Take a break after 2-3 months for 2-3 weeks.
No known side-effects. Occasional reddish discolouration of urine is harmless.
Do not use if there is severe liver-dysfunction and/or blockage of bowels, during pregnancy and nursing.

MA634 not only maintains clear airways but it supplies comfort and relaxation to the forehead, as well as any joints and muscles, when applied externally. Painful inflammations such as sprains respond well when used as a rubefacient.
As an inhalation oil it is useful for breathing problems in the sinuses and respiratory tract. The herbs in this traditional formula include camphor, eucalyptus, clove and fennel, which help lubricate and soothe the sinuses and cleanse impurities from the respiratory system.

External: dilute1:10 in carrier oil and rub into affected muscle/joint or congested chest Headaches: 1-2 drops neat on temples
Caution: Not to be applied over broken or ulcerated skin.
"When supporting clients with bronchial/nasal problems, this oil is the one that has been most effective. Feedback from clients, in the short term, has always been that they immediately get relief from symptoms. In the long term I can say, from personal experience, MA634 is the oil I rely on when suffering from symptoms of colds and hay fever."
"Clients have reported experiencing extremely effective pain relief from using MA634, from using it neat on areas of nerve/muscular pain. I often use it for sciatic pain within remedial treatments."
