AROMATHERAPY
During an Aromatherapy Massage, essential oils are applied to the skin and worked into the body, using neuromuscular techniques focused upon the nervous system.
The massage loosens tight muscles and clears blocked tissue by focusing on control-points in the energy-system. As the skin responds, the subcutaneous nerves communicate with the internal organs, glands, nerves and circulatory system.
The effect may be stimulating or calming - depending upon the types of oils used and, also, upon the needs of the individual receiving the treatment.
The oils are compatible with the basic structure of the skin, penetrating it layer by layer - moisturising it, making it more supple and stimulating the production of new cells.
The body is, also, beneficially affected by the scent of the essential oils deployed. The nose contains approximately ten million neurones, which interact with odour-molecules. These are olfactory receptors, which communicate odours to the emotional centre in the brain - otherwise known as the 'limbic system'.
This phenomenally active system communicates with other vital areas of the brain, e.g. those related to controlling the heart-rate, blood-pressure, memory, reactions to stress, etc. The glands, which regulate the release of hormones, also communicate with this limbic system or 'small brain'.
As the body is massaged with the powerful oils, each selected for its unique, holistic properties, the psychological, as well as the physiological effects, are astounding. In this manner, the massage acts concurrently on both body and brain, calming 'jangled' nerves and stimulating energy-flow, relieving tension and depression and eliminating toxins, whilst building healthy tissue.
An Aromatherapy massage, then, invokes nothing less than NEW LIFE in the body.
As a result, one not only appears and feels younger - but actually becomes as if younger! 'Becoming younger' is not an unfounded, vain claim.
By way of clarification, more must be said, in particular, about the oils. The nature of essential oils allows them to penetrate skin more easily than water or common vegetable oils.
How does this happen? Essential oils are 'lipophilic', i.e. easily blended with fats, and human skin comprises fats, as well as other substances. Also, the structure of an essential oil-molecule is smaller then that of the skin, enabling it to enter the skin more easily and, thereby, the blood-circulatory system. The newer cells under the dead surface of the skin are growing and, consequently, require nourishment.
The result is that essential oils, appropriately chosen, actually rejuvenate these skin-cells during the process of the massage. Aromatherapy massage is, therefore, beneficial to most Stress-related disorders, Rheumatism, Migraines, Digestive and Respiratory ailments.
All practitioners are members of The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists and adhere to their strict codes and guidelines.

AYURVEDIC TRIPS TO NEPAL - See end of this page
BOWEN THERAPY (THE BOWEN TECHNIQUE Nature in Balance).
It is easy to forget that the body is part of nature. Our modern lives subject us to many harmful aspects, without us realising that the body is a finely tuned structure needing little to upset the balance. It is only when something goes wrong that we appreciate how much we rely on normal functioning and are, therefore, anxious to restore the balance quickly.
The BOWEN TECHNIQUE is a series of gentle moves on the muscle and connective tissue of the whole body, using the thumb and fingers. There is no manipulation or adjustment of hard tissue and the treatment is very gentle, subtle and relaxing. The non-invasiveness and gentleness are what makes the Bowen Technique so unique.
It can be performed through light clothing, each session lasting approximately 30-45 minutes. In many cases, long standing pain can be relieved in 2-6 sessions, although further treatments may sometimes be required. Osteopaths, Chiropractors, Sports Therapists and Physiotherapists are among the many professionals and lay people who use the Bowen Technique and are continually amazed at the effectiveness of this simple and gentle form of 'hands on' therapy. The Bowen Technique is a method of enabling the body to restore itself. It allows the body to do the work required - without imposing the will of the therapist onto the patient. The patient has the opportunity to relax and allow the body time to make the subtle, fine adjustments which help to rebalance, relieve tension and reduce pain.
The Bowen Technique addresses many diverse and varied conditions. It is safe and effective for people of all ages. It is ideal for sport-injuries, R.S.I., frozen shoulder, back-pain, tennis elbow and respiratory symptoms. Many other conditions, including M.E., hayfever, migraine and asthma have responded favourably and there is no situation where The Bowen Technique cannot be safely used.
The Australian Connection
The BOWEN TECHNIQUE was pioneered by Mr. Tom Bowen of Victoria, Australia in the 1950s. He alone treated an incredible 13,000 patients a year. Oswald Rentsch, an osteopath, studied under Tom Bowen and documented his work. 'Ossie' has been responsible subsequently for introducing the technique into many countries world-wide, with the UK being the most recent to discover the power of this remarkable therapy. 'Bowtech', the original method of The Bowen Technique, was devised by Mr Tom Bowen.
Case histories:
Erica, aged 13, was diagnosed as having ME at aged 11. She had been unwell for 2 years and bed-bound for 8 months, unable to stand, walk or function mentally. She was treated weekly for one month and monthly thereafter. Within three months she had returned to full time school after two years off. One year later she is studying PE to GCSE level and is involved in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.
Derek, aged 62, presented a frozen shoulder that had restricted his natural arm movement to less than 20% of normal. The shoulder was exceedingly painful to lie on and, as an active man keen on amateur dramatics, it was making life difficult. He was seen three times, after which the shoulder had returned to 100% range of movement with no further pain.
Michelle, aged 13, presented a diagnosed case of tenosynovitis of the lower arm. A very talented tennis player, she had been unable to write, use a knife or grip a tennis racquet for some months. After three treatments, she had returned to her normal standard of competitive tennis and she had no return of pain.
Margaret, aged 55, came with considerable lower back pain inflicted after moving a heavy dustbin. She was at first sceptical that such a light treatment could do anything. She phoned two days later to say that, after only one treatment, the pain had completely gone and that she had full range of movement. She required no further treatment.
Jenny, aged 15, had suffered with lower back and neck pains continually for two years. Medical tests showed that she had been born with a damaged vertebra which exposed the nerve. The back and neck were in spasm and very painful to even a light touch. After one session, there was some relief: after two sessions there were two days when there was no pain and after three sessions there was only occasional pain - though the areas were still painful to the touch. Treatment is ongoing.
Helen, aged 38, experienced general lethargy and found it hard to motivate herself. Within an hour of her first session she was re-energised and feeling "terrific". Helen now has a treatment every three weeks as her life is very stressful and she does not leave enough time to naturally 're-charge'.
Martha, aged 71, has osteoporosis in her lower spine and also had a trapped nerve that she was advised to have released via an operation. She was frightened an operation might damage her spine even more. The trapped nerve was causing numbness and pain in her right leg. After her second session she sat up from a lying position without having to turn onto her side - something she had not been able to do for years - and the numbness and pain were reduced by 50%. Treatment is ongoing.
Therapists are members of The Bowen Therapists European Register or The Bowen Association UK.

FOOT REFLEX MASSAGE
Reflexology is an efficient procedure for stimulating the body's healing forces through precise massage applied to reflex points in the feet. Each reflex point corresponds to part of the body; therefore, by virtue of a Reflex treatment, one can treat the whole person. Evidently forms of Reflexology were practised by African and Red Indian tribes and by the ancient Egyptians. Dr William Fitzgerald, an American Ear, Nose and Throat specialist, achieved public attention, in the early 1920s, by discovering that pressure applied to an area of the foot anaesthetised the ear. Later practitioners have developed and expanded his original work.
Reflexology and Reflex Massage relieve many disorders, including migraines, back-problems, thyroid imbalances, circulatory disorders, sciatica and stress. Whilst not claimed as a 'cure-all', many conditions have been relieved by a course of treatments. The arrangement of the reflex areas is such that a 'map' of the body is found in the soles of the feet. The right and left feet correspond to the right and left sides of the body. The arrangement is based on a system of ten longitudinal energy-zones, described by Dr Fitzgerald in the 1930's.
Exactly how reflexology works is not yet proven - though several theories exist. The Institute of Reflexology adheres to the view that energy is constantly flowing through channels or zones in the body that terminate to form reflex points on the hands and feet. When the energy flow is unimpeded, we remain healthy; if blocked by tension, or congestion, disease occurs.
The initial benefit of reflex treatment is relaxation. Reducing tension improves blood supply, enables unimpeded nerve functioning and re-establishes harmony (homeostasis) among bodily functions. Since most diseases stem from the effects of stress, a reflex treatment from a qualified practitioner can be of enormous benefit for a wide range of conditions.
During treatment, all the reflex points in both feet are massaged. Extra attention is given to those areas related to complaints, e.g. if a woman is suffering from migraines associated with her menstrual cycle, attention is given to the areas relating to the head and hormonal system. Fairly firm pressure is applied to each reflex point and, if the corresponding part of the body is disordered, tenderness will be felt in the foot. This ranges from a dull ache to a sharp pain, subject to the degree of imbalance. However, treatment is not painful and pressure applied is adjusted to suit each client.
It takes approximately 30 minutes to massage all the reflex areas and, during that time, you will be sitting or lying comfortably. Although a powerful therapy, many people find the treatment a pleasant opportunity to relax. For most conditions, a course of treatment is required but this will be discussed during the free consultation.
All practitioners are members of The International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists and adhere to their strict codes and guidelines.

HOT STONE MASSAGE
One of the fastest growing new therapies in Europe, Hot Stone Therapy uses specially heated volcanic lava stones, applied to the body in relaxing, unique ways, combined with Swedish-style or lymphatic drainage massage movements.
Hot stone therapy goes beyond the physical experience of typical massage and enters deeper dimensions of relaxation, health and well-being. It has ancient roots dating back some 5,000 years to India and almost certainly the Mayan Culture. Stones have been used for divination, warmth, healing and protection since the beginning of recorded time.
The Japanese use stones to warm their abdomens to aid digestion and the Chinese have been using hot stones to relieve muscular pain for some 4,000 years. In Ayurveda - the ancient Nepalese and Indian therapy - Prana is the energy or the breath of life moving through all forms giving life. Yogis work with this energy using breathing techniques, meditation, physical exercise and massage to produce altered states of consciousness, healing and longevity. Not only using hands for manipulation and healing, but also utilising the tools the earth would naturally provide such as herbs, flowers, crystals and stones.
Healers traditionally used rocks from the river beds warming them on hot coals or in hot water. By placing the hot stones on cloth and arranging them along the energy channels of the body, a healing process would occur as heat has a tendency to relax the muscles drawing out muscle pain and discomfort. It was divined that the hot stones connected the flow or paths of energy, thus rebalancing the physical body, emotional mind and spirit as one. As the stones cool, the healer replaced them with hot ones.
Becoming increasing popular in the Western world, smooth lava stones are heated to a comfortably warm temperature prior to treatment. Hot stones are used to massage the body and are also placed on the body in specific places - stone placements.
The treatment starts with tiny river rocks placed between the toes to de-stress and stimulate the nerve endings in the feet and goes on to use a variety of sizes of stones depending upon what part of the body is being massaged. Its simplicity does not take away from the benefits and usefulness of this natural massage tool and the quality and size of the stone will determine how long the stone will hold heat effectively.
The heat from the stones is reputed to help increase the heart rate, regulating blood flow. It also helps to eliminate lactic and uric acid waste from the muscles, which build up from stress and poor lifestyle habits. Stiff joints benefit from the penetrating heat, making this an excellent choice after exercise or physical work. Hot Stone Therapy is also used to help relieve stress, poor circulation, depression, PMT, menopausal symptoms and is effective for some skin disorders.
Cold Stone Facials are superb in helping to reduce facial redness, irritation and flushing.
Hot Stone Massage £70.00 (70-80mins)
Cold Stone Facial £35.00 (20-30 mins)

INDIAN HEAD MASSAGE
Indian Head-Massage is an ancient art that has been practised for many years in market squares and on street corners in India. Ayurveda is the traditional, medical science of India and Nepal. By combining the two disciplines we get a very holistic way of working as Ayurvedic essential oils and carrier oils are used in the treatment - both tailored to the individual's needs.
Stimulation of the scalp's circulation helps tone the muscles, relieves eye-strain and headaches, improves concentration and boosts the immune-system. It also eliminates muscular tension and restores joint-movement by stretching and mobilising the tissues of the neck and shoulder.

REIKI HEALING
Reiki means universal life-energy, i.e. rei - universe, ki - life-force, a Japanese system of healing promoting all aspects of well-being, Reiki is a form of healing touch that conducts energy through the giver to the receiver.
Its most profound effect is an almost immediate feeling of complete relaxation that reduces stress-levels dramatically. A holistic therapy, in that it works on the mind, body and spirit by stimulating the body's own natural healing capacity, it can be used alone, or with other treatments, to help restore physical and emotional problems.

Su Hagan, our Principal Tutor, has branched out and started a new, personal venture: taking people to Ayurvedic Clinics in Nepal & Goa. Su lived for 13 years in both Nepal and India, speaks Nepalese and is ideally suited to organise and lead these trips. She trained in Ayurvedic Medicine with Vaidya Mana Bajracharya at his clinic in Kathmandu in the 1970s. We would personally recommend these trips to anyone who would like to have Ayurvedic treatment, or who would just like to visit either of these fascinating cities with a well-versed tour leader.
In Nepal and India, Ayurvedic Medicine has been used effectively for millenia. The role of Ayurveda is to maintain the natural harmony of the body in order to retain its resonance with the rest of the Universe. The role of the physician is to correct any imbalance by intervening in the pathological cycle and re-initiating healthy processes with the help of appropriate diet and medicine. The Ayurvedic sages (as well as Florence Nightingale) said that cures are affected by Nature itself - the physician and the medicines only assist Nature.
Ayurveda has a reputation of success with disorders affecting the Westerner. We have an accelerating history of not looking after our bodies, leading to impotency and other imbalances affecting our octave of sex - from birth to death. In Ayurveda, emphasis is placed on sexual balance and pinpointing traumas that may be contributing to ill health.
The Doctors are Ayurvedic 'Vaidyas' with extensive experience of treating Westerners. They consult with and treat people who wish to extend their knowledge of traditional medicine. These trips are unique opportunities to receive traditional treatment in ethnic Nepalese and Indian surroundings.
The following is an outline of the Nepal trip:
Arriving at Kathmandu Airport in the late afternoon, one is met, unless it is cloudy, with a view of the magnificent snowcaps of the Himalayas after landing at 4,323 feet. Groups are met and taken to a 3 Star Hotel, situated in the Thamel district of Kathmandu, owned by a Nepali, with close family ties to Su's in-laws, who goes out of his way to see that guests are well cared for. Rooms are twin-bedded with en-suite bathrooms. It is usually possible to have a single room at a supplement. The hotel conforms to Western standards, having sitting areas, conference rooms and a roof garden that affords magnificent views of the surrounding mountains. The Hotelier has a deep interest in Nepalese culture and artifacts and the Hotel has many examples of his collection on display. He is only too happy to advise on authentic Thangka paintings and other items of interest to the Western visitor and he often accompanies us on day trips where we have the pleasure of his vast knowledge.
After arrival, there is one rest day. On the second day, appointments are scheduled with the Doctor and personalised treatments are recommended. Prior to the trip, each participant completes a health-profile that is sent to the Doctor to help identify possible treatments prior to the initial consultation.
Treatments will include combinations of the following: abhyanga (full body massage), facial massage (with ghee and herbs), ubtan (coating and massaging the body with a coarse paste), steam-baths, shirodhara (warm oil poured onto the forehead and through the hair), pichu (hot herbal compresses), herbal baths and chakra basti (chakra cleansing - dough-balls placed over the chakra points into which warm oil is poured).
There will be time to visit all the wonderful temples and shrines and to browse through the local bazaars. A visit to one of the many tailors is recommended, so you can have your favourite clothes copied. Kathmandu is inexpensive: one can have a pair of trousers made (including material) for £5. The bazaars sell just about anything at a fraction of the cost one would pay in England.
Kathmandu is very rich in culture and one of the highlights is the visit to Bodnath, the Tibetan village and Stupa, where you will see the Tibetan Monks prostrating themselves and turning their prayer-wheels. This is a magical place - difficult to describe - as you will experience for yourselves. Bodnath is a spiritual home for Buddhists and many make the pilgrimage to circle the Stupa and pray. There will also be an opportunity to visit the burning ghats and temples at Pashupatinath - an extraordinary experience for a Westerner.
Alison Perrott and Su Hagan were in Kathmandu for 3 weeks during August and September 2001 to see if Ayurvedic medicine could help Alison's chronic liver condition. All other disciplines tried have so far failed. They returned to Nepal in December 2001. Results to date are very encouraging. Alison's report (1) on her visit is available. Su took a group of people in December 2001 and a copy of the report (2) written by one of the participants makes fascinating reading. To obtain copies, please e-mail Su Hagan at su.hagan@ntlworld.com
Please apply for costs (these will fluctuate, depending on the time of the year).
A complete itinerary will be available to those who express interest in the trip - please e-mail Su at su.hagan@ntlworld.com
Few people are better equipped to guide an Ayurvedic trip to Nepal than Su Hagan. Su initially went to Nepal, as a 21 year old, to start an English school under the auspices of the V.S.O. She married the son of a Russian ballet-dancer and hotel entrepeneur and continued living in Nepal for thirteen years before moving to India. Whilst in Nepal she trained in Ayurvedic medicine, for four years, with the late Dr. Mana - a well known Ayurvedic Vaidya. In addition to this, she is a qualified Senior Aromatherapy Tutor teaching to International standards and was Vice-Chairman of the ISPA (International Society of Professional Aromatherapists) until its amalgamation into the IFPA (International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists) where she still serves on the Committee. She speaks Nepali well and has a natural empathy with the Nepalese people - a kind and generous race.
The trips are open to both those with health problems and those who simply want to experience another culture and its way of managing health. But places are limited - so, if you are interested, e-mail Su at su.hagan@ntlworld.com to arrange a telephone consultation to ascertain whether such a trip would fulfil your expectations.
