Carrot Seed Oil

Edited: November 13, 2022

My mother always told me that eating carrots would help me see in the dark. She was right – she was usually right. Rich in Carotene and Vitamin A, the roots are indeed beneficial to the eyes and are effective antioxidants.

But carrots have so much more to give us. Carrot Seed oil has incredible properties that are only now being understood by modern science. The mild, earthy sweetness of Carrot Seed produces a powerful yet well-tolerated oil with a wide range of healing properties.

  • HAIR: Carrot Seed oil makes a fantastic hair conditioner when mixed with apple cider vinegar and water (5 drops of oil, 1 teaspoon of vinegar to 500mls water) to moisturize the hair and scalp after shampooing. Massaging a few drops of Carrot Seed oil into your scalp between washes encourages your scalp to produce sebum, making your hair shine.
  • ANTI-AGEING: beat those wrinkles with Carrot Seed oil. It is packed with vitamins and nutrients to boost the body’s immune response to UV rays, which makes it excellent at preventing sun damage. It also has detoxifying properties and stimulates the rejuvenation of cells.
  • CANCER: studies have shown that carotenes have anticarcinogenic properties due to their role as antioxidants with strong cancer-fighting properties. Antioxidants protect cells from free radicals; substances that work to destroy cell membranes and DNA leading to increased risk of cancer.
  • THE BODY: Carrot Seed oil tones the skin, tissues and muscles of the body. Absorbed through the skin, it acts as a tonic for the liver, spleen and stomach and benefits the entire digestive system. It stimulates the appetite too helping those convalescing after illness, the elderly as well as sufferers of anorexia and other similar eating disorders.
  • SKIN: antiseptic properties make it useful when treating abscesses, boils, infections and acne – ulcers respond well to Carrot Seed oil.
  • RELAXATION: It is widely used in aromatherapy massage due to its mild, sweet and soothing earthy aroma which is very effective in relieving stress and anxiety and inducing a sense of relaxation and refreshment.
  • CAUTION: The oil is generally accepted as safe but pregnant women should avoid it as it contains a small amount of phenols which can be abortifacient.

This is just a small taste (pun intended) of the amazing powers of Carrot Seed essential oil. Used to treat the body and mind since ancient Egyptian times, we often forget that our ancestors knew so much that is only recently being ‘proven’ by modern science.

So, while you enjoy your carrot salad, be in awe of this taken-for-granted medicinal plant and – always listen to your mother.
